Age Of Mythology was the next advancement on the already popular game, Age Of Empires 2. Age Of Mythology makes for an interesting alternative with some really nice improvements. We will go through the aspects of the game we found useful and differences between Age Of Empires 2 and Age Of Mythology from a multiplayer's point of view. |

AOM Farming |
In Age Of Mythology, you no longer have to keep replenishing your farm stocks and fishing fields never run out. This allows you to concentrate on the important aspects of the game, attacking your mates!

Your base in Age Of Mythology is much more vulnerable than in
Age Of Empires 2. You can't build walls that are of any real benefit. A simple
wooded enclosure wall is all you have to build, but your troops are produced
much quicker and they seem to last a bit longer. This allows you to continue
to advance your Kingdom and only go into military production as and when you
need it. |
Unlike in Age Of Empires 2 where you can build a Town Centre anywhere you want, in Age Of Mythology, you can only build your Town Centre in designated spots. This improves the game, and prevents your enemies from building a "spare" Town Centres at the edge of the map where you cant find them easily.
Every player starts Age Of Mythology with the same capped population limit. All you need to build is 10 houses in your first, main area. Once these are built, you will be able to create your maximum number of troops. Each new Town Centre you build will add more population, so be sure to capture as many bases as possible.
We where a little disappointed with the array of ships available. Most of the ships in Age Of Mythology seem to be week and slow. Some of the Mythology creatures that dwell in the oceans though can be very affective.
Another improvement in Age Of Mythology is the ability to queue your research and troop construction. This really speeds up the creation of troops and means that you require fewer buildings to get your research done quickly. It also frees you up to concentrate on game play. There seems to be a lot of upgrades and research to do, but don't let that put you off. It is fast and cheap to upgrade your troops and buildings in Age Of Mythology.
As you advance through Age Of Mythology, you gain favours from the Gods. Beware, these favours can only be used once each. Once you have advanced to the top of your tree, you would have gained 4 special favours from the Gods. You will find them in the top centre of your screen, just select the favour, and then select the location on the map you would like to inflict the favour.

The Age Of Mythology wonders are very spectacular buildings. They don't have any real ability, but can swing the game in your favour depending on the game type. Once built, you don't have very much time to destroy them before the owner wins the game. The trick is to not allow your enemies the privilege of building one in the first place. |

There is a nice little bonus if
you manage to acquire a relic. Unlike in Age Of Empires 2 where you simply
gain gold when you have a relic in your temple, in Age Of Mythology,
you gain a power. You can still destroy your enemies Temple and steel their Relic's and return with them to your base Temple. |
At first we struggled to get our trading running. We had our Markets, made some Trading Carts, and sent them to an allies Market, and waited, and waited. The Trading Carts just sat there!
In Age Of Empires 2, you trade from Market to Market. In Age Of Mythology, you have to trade from Market to Town Centre! This had us baffled for a short time until we realised.
There is a nice little improvement in Age Of Mythology where you can trade with yourself! This is a great help and allows you to accumulate more Gold faster.
There isn't a Trading Ship in Age Of Mythology. All of your trading is done on land, and with ANY Town Centre.
The game as a whole felt very familiar and easy to play. Any Age Of Empires 2 fan will enjoy this game. Personally, I don't think it will replace Age Of Empires 2 and I think you'll get a little bored with this game after a few games. Towards the end of a game, it can become a little tiresome and "slow". It makes for a great alternative to the Age Of Empires 2 game series and is well worth a play. As the game is now a few years old, you can normally pick up a copy very cheap, buy a copy of Age Of Mythology and give it a go.
